Landing page, in its wider sense, is any page which the user first sees when coming from another web site. More specifically, it is a page the web design of which is developed in a special way to, later, link to this page from other web sites. Usually landing pages designed in this fashion are used for a certain task - to demonstrate a necessary information, gather data about clients, transfer users to another page etc.
